All the weapons we can get

GAN: Why that base, Cally?

CALLY: Sooner or later, Blake is going to attack Federation Central Control on Earth itself.

VILA: Later. Much later.

AVON: And alone, probably.

JENNA: I doubt that.

GAN: He wouldn't be alone if you just left him, Avon.

AVON: You would stay with him?

GAN: Yes.

AVON: [Smiles] Virtually alone, then.

CALLY: And for that attack we shall need all the weapons we can get.

BLAKE: [Enters] And where better to get them than the Weapons Development Base?

AVON: According to Orac, almost anywhere.

No, I am not alone

CALLY: [telepaths] Hello [Sits up mentally, while her physical body remains in the gully. Smiles and picks up moon disc]

ORAC: You cannot stop me, child of Auron.

CALLY: Then why do you threaten me?

ORAC: Orac is my bridge. You stand before it, puny telepath.

CALLY: Yes, I know you now. My powers are in your dimension, and Orac's carrier waves are your bridge.

ORAC: The energy is building. I am ready to cross. Hungry dark to absorb the blazing suns.

CALLY: I will deny you.

ORAC: You are alone.

CALLY: No. The warmth you mock me with is here. [holds out moon disk] I am not alone. You will stay in your universe of darkness.

ORAC: You will not disconnect. You will not dis... [Cally's hand pulls Orac's key and it appears in Cally's hand on Zondar. She sits up, spilling moon discs that have clustered around her.]

She ran straight over me

HANNA: No, she didn't hit me, she ran straight over me. I was just in the way. I never saw anyone so scared.

VILA: You couldn't tell why?

GAN: You couldn't see what was driving her?

HANNA: I don't think I'd want to. You can't share someone's madness.

GAN: They can on Auron. Cally told me her people can share any experience. And telepathy means they never have to be alone. Makes them very strong.

BEK: Well, when they're together. I mean, what happens when one's isolated?

GAN: I think that's what we're finding out.

They've done a brilliant job!

BLAKE: I will offer no defense, but I will plead not guilty.

VARON: These are grave charges. Without extenuating circumstances, you might face deportation. A mental institution would be better than spending the rest of your life on Cygnus Alpha.

BLAKE: [With deliberation] I will offer no defense. Right?

VARON: Won't you reconsider?

BLAKE: Even if you could prove me innocent, the charges have been made. I've got to hand it to them. [At the security camera] They've done a brilliant job!!

CALLY: (telepaths) Who are you?

CALLY: Will you answer my question? Who are you? I ask you for the last time, who are you?

BLAKE: Do you mind if I get up. (lunges at her)

[Cally quickly goes around him and knocks him flat again.]

CALLY: (telepaths) Try that again and I'll blow your head off. Now what are you doing here?

BLAKE: My name is Blake. I'm trying to make contact with the resistance group.

CALLY: (telepaths) How did you get here?

BLAKE: We came from.... (looks quickly to the side).

[Cally also looks to the side. Blake grabs her and throws her over his head. Blake disarms her. Points the gun at her on the ground]

CALLY: May you die alone and silent.

The System has questions

[Blake is marched through hallway. A gang of slaves carrying a heavy pipe section stagger, the rear slave falls and is punished by a guard. Blake runs over to stop the guard and helps the slave up. The guard moves to hit Blake]

ALTA 2: Stop! ... March on.

[Control room. Alta 2 enters and she and Alta 1 touch the silver dots on their foreheads. The pedestal dome beeps, Alta 2 places her hands on it, and it gargles. Blake is pushed into the room and Alta 1 motions him to a chair across from hers]

ALTA 2: Acknowledged. [To Alta 1] There is disturbance on the control program.

ALTA 1: Until stable, all commands must be checked and confirmed.

ALTA 2: Acknowledged.

ALTA 1: [To Blake] The System has questions to put to you.

BLAKE: I'd like to ask one or two myself.

ALTA 1: That is not permitted.

BLAKE: For instance, what is the System?

ALTA 1: The System is the supreme power of Spaceworld and the three life-supporting planets which orbit our sun. The System is a complex of infallible machines.

BLAKE: All of this? You mean even you are computer controlled?

ALTA 1: We serve the System. Its questions and orders are routed through me, but the words and thoughts are those of the System. Is that understood?

BLAKE: I demand your assurance that the rest of my crew remain unharmed.

ALTA 1: [To guard] Force level seven. [Guard puts prod against Blake's neck]

BLAKE: All right! Understood.

ALTA 1: We will commence. [Places hand on smaller dome next to her chair and speaks in a mechanical voice] State the circumstance by which you came to be aboard Deep Space Vehicle II.

BLAKE We call it the Liberator...

No, there's something missing

TRAVIS: How long were Blake and his men in here?

PRELL: Five, ten minutes, not more.

TRAVIS: Five or ten minutes? They could have set demolition charges in thirty seconds. What were they doing in that extra time?

PRELL: Perhaps they had trouble getting them to work, sir.

TRAVIS: And why did they take you and your men out of here?

PRELL: I suppose they thought it was safer with us out of the way.

TRAVIS: No. No. There's something missing. I'm missing something. [pause] Do you still have the original construction plans for this room?

PRELL: They'll be on record, sir.

TRAVIS: And detailed diagrams of all the circuits?

PRELL: Yes.

TRAVIS: Good. I'm sending in a forensic team. I want a full catalog of every item in this room.

PRELL: But, sir--

TRAVIS: Everything must be accounted for.

PRELL: But, sir-- [breaks off as Travis turns to stare at him coldly.] Well, that could take months, sir, if it's possible at all.

TRAVIS: Prell, if I were you I'd make it possible. I want that catalog in twenty hours.

PRELL: Sir. [There is a ringing. Prell uses a handheld communicator, holding it alternately to his ear and throat] Yes? Right!

TRAVIS: What is it?

PRELL: They found something, under the rubble. I think you'd better come along.

Optimistic Vila

TARRANT: That's the spiral arm in sector twelve. That means were on the edge of the galaxy and into spiral space.

AVON: Hardly a healthy place.

VILA: Why?

TARRANT: Sector twelve is uncharted. When I was at the Federation Space Academy, survey ships sent to chart Sector Twelve had a distressing habit of not returning.

VILA: Let's hope it's a habit we don't pick up.

ZEN: Information. Speed increase to Standard by Nine.

Ode to Ensor (Pt 1)

SHADES OF LIGHT (Ode to Ensor)

Our lives exist between the dark and the light,
Mother Nature can be kind, but she has a nasty bite.

And just when you think that you're doing okay,
You can be sure that trouble is not far away.

For Ensor this lesson came early in life,
For though brilliant of mind, his heart met with strife.

And while he was a man of creative endeavours,
The Federation would use them to further its treasures.

What became of his wife, he never did say,
But it all became so much that he had to run away.

So with son in tow, he made to Aristo,
A place that no-one had long called their home.

With rising seas of acid, and phibians not placid,
The last civilisation had long since been scattered.

But for Ensor it was perfect, a quiet retreat,
And among the ruins his escape was complete.

Left alone to work, his mind was free,
It ticked over and over with creativity.

Necessity is the mother of most invention,
And on Aristo there is no Federation pension.

So, it started with one hack of a Federation computer,
It was so easy when he turned his Tarriel cell to looter.

And so an idea was born to build a super computer,
That could read every cell in every computer.

Did I say computer? Pardon me, I forgot,
A computer it most certainly is not.

It's a brain, a genius, a probability ruminator,
With a personality befitting its acerbic maker.

Progress was slow, with no resources to hoe,
Patience is a virtue when you're working alone.

But as the days turned to years, Orac was born,
And Ensor's powers heralded a new dawn.

But beneath the bright light of Orac's glow,
Mother Nature was building a strong undertow.

For though Ensor knew his new heart would expire,
It still came as a surprise when he began to tire.

At first he fought the tiredness with all of his might,
But as the days wore on he became resigned to his plight.

And as the man of brilliance began to fade,
He found amusement in other new ways.

"Hello, my little ones" he would say to his fish,
And in the next breath keel over with pain and wince.

But though Ensor was resigned to quietly pass out his days,
His son was determined to find other ways.

So to the cabinet of drugs his son took recourse,
Only to find that they made Ensor worse.

And when Ensor declared "Enough filthy drugs, let me go in peace!"
His son turned his mind to make the woe cease.

"Sell Orac?" roared Ensor "Over my dead body!"
But as the irony echoed, it made sense oddly.

"We will never be free of the Federation!", his son did plea,
"We have to make our bed in this den of thieves".

And so to the Federation his son would go,
To do a deal with the devil, his head hung low.

Where the hell is Cancer?

SOOLIN: He's dead, I take it?
AVON: Oh he's dead all right. Question is, how did he die?
SOOLIN: I should imagine friend Cancer would be a master of unarmed combat. Few seconds pressure at a vital point.
AVON: Possibly. What do you make of this?
SOOLIN: What?
AVON: A red patch on his hand. Hardly a vital point.
SOOLIN: What does it matter how the poor old man died? The question is "where the hell is Cancer?"
